Vitalant: Give Blood, Save the Humans

Not enough people are giving blood, so we’ve recruited our furry friends to help spread the word about the importance of regular blood donations. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a life-transforming blood transfusion which must come from a volunteer donor. You are crucial to the health and well-being of your community.

Connecting Passion with Purpose

For more than 75 years, selfless blood donors in Colorado have partnered with Bonfils Blood Center, now Vitalant, to provide patients a precious resource that has no substitute. Your help is needed now as much as ever. While Colorado’s population continues to grow, the number of blood donors who give at least once a year is a fraction of what it once was, just 70,000 in 2017 down from 110,000 a decade prior.

Each year, nearly 5 million Americans need blood transfusions. Blood helps trauma and burn patients, premature infants, heart surgery patients, organ transplant recipients and those fighting cancer, among others. In emergencies, it’s the blood already on hospital shelves that saves lives.

Do Good for Yourself and Others

Experience the wonder. Donating blood is one of the easiest ways to give back to your community. If you’ve never donated blood before, we encourage you to try! The ultimate pay-it-forward moment—in order to move life forward—is the simple act of giving blood.

If you are blessed with good health and already donate blood, thank you. If you were once told you could not donate, please take another look at the eligibility requirements, as regulations frequently change. If you are not eligible to donate to the volunteer blood supply, you may be able to donate for research. There are other ways to contribute, whether you volunteer to host a blood drive or personally ask a friend or family member to consider donating in your place.

It takes all of us to make our community whole, partnering to help patients whose hopes for a better tomorrow are contingent on a gift that can’t be manufactured.

Together, we are vital.
