Eliminating food insecurity for older adults

After COVID-19 struck, access to healthy and nutritious meals became more limited for older adults. Experts say that 1 in 10 people in Colorado are “food insecure” – meaning they lack consistent access to a reliable food source. This pandemic increased that disparity for individuals 65 and older, those most at-risk of the virus who are told to “shelter-at-home” for their own safety. For many, that means limiting or eliminating shopping trips. Early on we heard from an individual who hadn’t eaten in 2 days for fear of leaving their home.

Rapid response

We quickly responded by delivering 10 days of fresh frozen meals prepared by our day center chef. The need grew and we developed a program to help during this uncertain time to support our community’s elders weekly food and supplies needs. Since March, we have delivered nearly 20,000 meals along with hygiene and household supplies.

A community united

Through community support, we serve seniors— helping them to both stay safe and thrive in their homes. Your financial support enables our tireless staff to make critical connections via phone and technology with our clients and their caregivers for regular wellness check-ins and social connection to maintain their health and mental wellness. Through your generosity we can provide low- to no-cost in-home services (hygiene, meal preparation and homemaking, caregiver respite) and delivery of freshly prepared food and supplies directly to their doors.

Keep the good going

Until this crisis has fully passed for at-risk seniors, we remain committed to safely meeting basic needs to more of those we serve, but need your help to do so. Every donation will help and will be put to immediate use. To donate, visit www.SRCAging.org and select DONATE NOW or text GIVE5280 to phone number 44-321.
